If we already have a transponder and will not need to rent one, is there any kind of discount off of the $185? Im starting to get finances and budget in order and every dollar counts

Yes. The Ultralight Supersport and Superbike classes are no longer and those races have been replaced by Ultralight GP races. So now there will be three Ultralight GP races per weekend (six on a double-sprint weekend).

As far as I know, no discount would be given in this case.

the price has been the same since 2004 (how many things can you say that about?) which was before we had these transponders, The Club just added that to what you get, so I would think a discount is not an option. Then again I am not afiliated with the B.O.D so they would have to answer with any semblence of Fact or authority.

If you aren't refunded any money you could rent out yours for the weekend or rent out your rental. Too get your $50 back. I'm pretty sure if you asked nicely they would change the name registered on the rental. might be wrong.

To my understanding your name has to be associated/registered with your transponder for the season. So if you plan to use your own transponder later in the season this idea wouldn't work.
No one is trying to rip you off $50. The transponder fee is waived the first weekend for new racers as a nice gesture so purchasing/renting a transponder isn't something else they need to worry about. As Mark already stated above....the new rider weekend price is a steal...with or without a transponder.
New Rider Class: $185
Fees covered by above for your first weekend.
Standard Friday Practice: $100
Racer Entry Fee for the weekend: $60
Transponder rental: $50
And if you want to split hairs...there's a New Rider Race at the end of the Friday practice...which a standard sprint fee would be another $50.
So even if you take the transponder out of the equation....you're paying $25 for a day of classroom training and personal instruction from the Midwest's top riders.
We all should remember the CRA is a "Club", supported by member and race fees. Not some cooperate entity trying to nickle and dime you to death for profit. Looking for loop holes is only taking money out of the pocket that provides our racing opportunity.
Thus ends today's sermon and welcome to the club, everyone signing up for NRS (New Racer School).

Just to set the record straight you don't have to use the same transponder all year, but if you change transponders you need to go to let them know the new # so it is associated with the you as the rider. Not that you'd wnat to, but you could use a different transponder everyweekend: use yours, rent one, borrow one..... You could even run different transponders the same weekend. I'm sure someone has prolly had to due to crash damage or lack of charge.
**EDIT** Apparently if someone in the CRA has signed up a transponder as their personal one no one can use it that year
