(an excerpt from the April 1992 CRA Insider):

BACKGROUND OF THE FRAMSTAD CUP

Don Framstad and a small group of friends formed the Central Roadracing Association in 1974. Since the beginning it was a way for friends and enthusiasts to pool their resources and talents to enjoy the sport of motorcycle roadracing at Brainerd International Raceway. Over the last 17 years the CRA has grown to over 250 competition members and over 100 active members. The CRA has staffed countless professional roadrace events at BIR and has earned a reputation as one of the most competent and best trained organizations of cornerworkers and race track staff in the World!
Throughout the years Don Framstads huge contributions of time and effort as a worker, CRA board member, and new rider instructor have been instrumental in the success of the CRA. Throughout the years Don also earned himself a reputation as a master tuner and parts designer/fabricator. He often employed rather unorthodox methods but the results were often the same. Winning! He loved the role of the underdog in his racing using his creativity and experience to rise to the challenge.
In August of 1990, at the age of 37, Don died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash during a CRA endurance event.
In the Framstad spirit, the CRA is hosting "THE BRAINERD 200 SUPERBIKE CHALLENGE" in honor of the memory of Don Framstad and his great contributions to the sport of motorcycle roadracing, the overall winner of this event will be awarded "THE FRAMSTAD CUP".

The overall winner shall receive the Central Roadracing Associations "FRAMSTAD CUP". The riders name and type of machine will be engraved on the base of the trophy. The winner shall keep the trophy for one year and display it as he sees fit. The trophy will then be passed on to the next winner the following year and so on.

(The 1st Annual BRAINERD 200/FRAMSTAD CUP was on May 31, 1992)

The number 77 is permanently retired in honor and memory of Don Framstad, founding member, board member, technical inspector, chief rider school instructor, champion racer, and good friend.

FRAMSTAD CUP: 5 lap shoot-out, named in the honor of Don Framstad, a CRA founding member, championship racer, board member, chief new rider instructor, expert tuner, friend and mentor to countless racers and workers. This event features the top 3 finishers of each Trophy Dash class racing in a handicapped-start race. The slowest classes start first with the faster classes starting at staggered intervals based on average lap times from the Trophy Dashes. The ideal outcome would be each class winner crossing the finish line at the same time. The winner of this race receives the highly coveted Framstad Cup traveling trophy for the year.

Thanks for putting this together, Kurt.

As with the Pickled Piston traveling trophy there is some updating that needs to occur to the trophy itself. (There are missing names from specific years in particular.) The trophies are going to be collected, repaired (if necessary), and necessary layers added so that all the names (that we have available to us) can be added. It is important to the history of the club that if anyone has any information that could lead to the identification of previous winners not listed that the information be provided.

Thanks to all those whom participated in the Framstad Cup, and a special congratulations to past winners.

Was helping a friend move recently and we came across this original Framstad Safety-Wire Tool. Back in the day, aircraft safety wire twisters were expensive. This tool epitomizes Don's approach to just about everything. He called his company Eyeball Engineering.
