Hello all,

I'm thinking about getting a new Ninja 300 ABS from Wisconsin. I know I'll need to pay sales tax when I get back to Minnesota. Does anyone here know what the additional costs are for title fees, etc in MN for a new bike.

Thanks!

I'd like to know, too. I see cheaper prices at some of the 'Sconie dealers and I'm curious if bringing a new machine back to MN is going to end up costing just as much or more.

The bike is actually for my son. He would prefer a green Versys 300 abs, but didn't want to pay the extra cost over the Ninja. I decided that I'm going to pay the difference as I'd rather borrow a Versys from him. Can your friend get me a deal on a Versys 300 abs?

It's the same as if you bought a used bike from a private party. Title fee and plates are a minimal expense (maybe $30?). Tax is the lion's share.

So, there's no extra fees or taxes for licensing a bike in MN that was bought out of state? I'm just clarifying because I have been told the opposite. I have only bought a used WI once, but I never paid close attention to what taxes and fees I was paying.

Thanks! I'm going to do a little more research on pricing and then I'll call him later this week.

Luke, I'm basing that on a used bike. Maybe a new bike would be different, but I doubt it. Probably best to call the DMV.

You definitely don't have to pay a dealer paperwork processing fee.

By a Minnesota dealer, perhaps?

I have purchased a few new bikes from out of state. I simply had to pay the MN sales tax based off the purchase price and license/registration(same fee as buying a bike in-state) @ the MN DMV. No additional fees, same as if you were buying in MN and the dealer was taking care of the above process.

^^^ This is correct. For some reason dealers in the Milwaukee area have tons of cheap, new, leftover bikes and Minnesota dealers donít. No idea why but Iíve seen things thousands cheaper over there that you just donít see here.

Nah, just a buddy. But I wouldn't doubt it if he heard it from a MN dealer.

That's a hellofa deal to go outta state a little bit to save hundreds or thousands. But at the same time I would still talk to my local dealers to give them a chance at coming up with a comparable price to try and keep my business local.

I was just at the DMV getting tabs for my car so I asked about buying a new motorcycle out of state. The info I received is the same as has already been given in this thread. It is indeed the same as buying a used bike in MN. It is about $31 to put the title in your name. Plus tabs and licences plate since you'll need those for a new bike. The clerk didn't know the exact amount for that of the top of her head, but she thought is was less than $20. So about $51 plus 6.5% sales tax.

When I bought my R3, I stopped by my local dealer, told them I was on my way to WI to buy a bike, they came within $100 of the WI price. I thought it was worth paying a little extra to shop local, and not travel to WI.

Ive bought many new vehicles out of state. MUCH cheaper and the info herein is accurate - just TTL like you bought the vehicle in state.

Some states do have added fees if you buy from out of states but not MN. For instance Alabama required an "inspection fee" where the 300+ lb lady of color at DMV walks out to your vehicle, asks you to drive your vehicle up to meet her at the door so she doesnt have to walk more than 5 feet and then asks you to read her your vin # before she waddles back inside the a/c. That'll be $20. lol but its true
