I'm guessing there will either be a flat tax for it or you will have to claim what you paid for the bike, just like when transfering the title on a used bike.

Has anyone completed this yet? I too am looking at the Baja Designs so if you find a hook up Taco I'd definately be interested.

I see no mention of insurance but it stands to reason you will need liability for anything on the road? Anyone have any insight on that portion?

Thanks

I would assume, just like any other street bike, you would need liability insurance.

It stands to reason and as I read it, sounds like a stupid question.

You're right about it simply being liability. It's apparently the same type of thing as insuring your snowmobile or jetski. I actually added my xr100 last week since it dropped my premium some.

I've talked to the DMV in S. St. Paul and they were very resistant to plating any dirt bikes. All three of them told me ,"you can't plate something that's meant for offroad use only" until they found the form on their computer and read it several times. They then decided I would be able to get a plate but no title. That's alright with me but I'm going down to Roseville or Woodbury this week just to see if a different branch can be sweet talked into selling me a title AND a plate. The thought of having a plated but not titled vehicle is a little strange and just doesn't seem kosher. I'll be sure to report back if I have any success but I'm expecting to only be getting a plate and some tax/fee.

If anyone else has some insight...

Hmmm, shouldn't this PS2000 form get you a title? WTF?

That's what I thought and that's why I'm going to a different branch later this week. You know, since it literally says "Title application form". I knew better than to continue arguing with the DMV ladies on Friday since it, sadly, seemed like such a victory even getting them to acknowledge their OHM Cert Checklist as being real. I don't think I exactly soured the cream at S. St. Paul but I'm going to get a second opinion since they were pretty surly with me on Friday.

Has anyone else been told we get a plate but not a title as well?

More reconnaissance, I guess.

So I started this process with the DMV to title and plate my yz450f in the fall. I went up there, got my DNR stickers and what not. They actually offered to give me plates right then and there, if I was willing to fill out a couple forms and submit a couple pictures. Forever the opportunist, I dove right in. Got my stickers, gave them their pictures and forms and I walked out with plates. They promised my title would come shortly after.

I assumed I would get a letter back from the DMV saying that my plates were being revoked within 3 months. I waited and waited, then last week I finally got a letter back from the DMV. And it wasnt a revocation notice. I was freaking amazed.

They basically sent me a letter saying that the laws had changed since I tried to register the vehicle, and that in order to process the application that I would need to fill out the form from the first post(they even included one). Bring that completed form along with the letter they sent to any DMV location and my title would be mailed to me promptly after. All the while, the plates they gave me remain valid.

So apparently its the real deal. And not very painful. We'll see when the title actually shows up.

That letter may be very useful to people going through this process. Where'd you go?

I already have some myself, but those things should go like hotcakes come spring when everyone on earth realizes thay can go buy a $1400 dirtbike and turn it into the ultimate commuter legally for next to nothing.

You think the local pork chop brigade is going to go all freaking nazi this summer over equipment violations with the new laws? Is there even a roadside test for DMV approved lighting? I ran around for 2 months with pedal bike lights and a courier bell on my tard and didnt get messed with once last year. Granted I could blind someone at 50 yards with the battery powered light I have, but they'd have to be in that really narrow area of throw. I'm debating if I even want to spend the loot on a wired stator and perm lights for spring or continuing to run it like it is.

Anyone know what the consequences for equipment violations are? (lights, horn, mirrors, etc)
