Already planning for next years 5 hour. I like it! Another solution would be to train your lazy teammates on how to change tires on that bike :)

Ha! My teammates are Rockstarz and don't need to do anything other than ride fast.

Besides this was much easier...

Well the time is near for that summabitch on the black one front of me in this pic to to get his at Road America in a couple weeks. Although we've both run into build issues with our debut Moto America runs I think we may just make a CRA club appearance at the big show in the twins class. In my case it will be with Anthony aboard (in front of Jon) since I am too old for a MA license.

This was Friday, scheduled for a spec fuel dyno tune next week, then immortality or least a great weekend of racing in Elkhart Lake! 😊

End of the road or a new beginning?

We went to Road America for the MotoAmerica round last weekend. Motor was a beast. Bike was handling awesome. Tony was learning a new bike on new tires and dropping tons of time. He qualified for the race and had not yet pushed to 100%!

Here's the goods. Red line as raced last season in SS trim, blue line this year. Trap speeds at top of front straight higher than the Suzuki's, nobody able to pull on us up the hill.

Take track for sighting lap for Saturday's race. Grid up, stands on, warmers on, helmets off, media event. 2 minute horn, warmers off, clear the grid, riders away for the warmup lap,,,
Kaboom! Tranny let's go in Kettle Bottoms. Race over, 356lbs scrap aluminum back into trailer.

Next up, redemption attempt at Pittsburgh in August.

I was wondering what had happened! I saw that Tony had qualified but had the DNF for the race.

In that last pic, what am I looking at that's on the 213 bike just below the tank? Ram air intake? Was that legal for the class?

Exactly what it is. AP's new ram air box. It's legal, I guess. Only on this side of bike, rules state 'airbox open' but require some sort of 'box', beyond that...

Curious what the carnage looks like when you start tearing into the tranny.

2.8.8.16 Air box
a. The air box design is free but must be able to allow the engine to operate in all climatic conditions at all times (i.e. rain should not stall the engine).
b. The air box drains must be sealed.
c. Ram air tubes or ducts running from the fairing to the air box may be modified, replaced or removed.
d. All motorcycles must have a closed breather system. All oil breather lines must be connected and discharge in the air box.
e. Additional heat shielding is allowed (i.e. gold or silver heat tape).

3 of the 5 FZ's had ram air (maybe a 4th, I don't remember looking at that 1).

1 of the 5 SV's had ram air (Chris Parrish, finished in 2nd).

We removed the head in hopes of transplanting it to a donor motor. Discovered our initial damage assessment was only partially accurate. One of my shiney new pistons fell out of the bore, see pic. I don't think it's supposed to do that. Turns out the head is junk, sounds like my lost tools might be in the tranny, aaaand I'm thinking the rods are scrap. Oh welll, go big or go home they say.
Attached Image: temp_2.jpg
We haven't got into the bottom yet to check the big ends so we're not sure yet if it was simply fatigue that killed the rods or if we tightened up the bottom end or if the tranny took it. What came first? The chicken or the egg at this point.

Warden bought me 2 motors and said to get with it. I'm starting to like her.

The road to Pittsburgh starts here.

Holy Shit

The RA story is sad. Sorry that happened. At least some practice laps were had.

I'm looking forward to seeing this bike succeed and fight on the national stage. Get to it!

Not sad at all. We had the time of our lives and made some great friends. Not to mention we had great seats.

Kinda funny, on warm up lap the grid marshal pulls headphone aside, leans over to me and says, "you're 167 right? Rider off in Canada, mechanical." When he sees my soul running out my pant leg onto the ground he says, "one goes every race at this level son"

Would've been nice not to be 'that' guy but it is what it is. I get to dominate coffee clique at Perkins for weeks now.

Moto America folks were great! They were very helpful and at every turn were there to guide us and streamline our first attempt. It was as if they had assigned us a liason to facilitate for the weekend. We felt at home and relatively comfortable right off. I'm sure Jon had the same experience. Impressive.

Very cool it was such a positive experience! But I'm still sad that the motor blew and the timing of it was terrible. Taste of the big league, I guess haha

We salvaged the cams from the blown motor and put together this;
Green trace is last year's SS motor (stock airbox, decked head, degreed stock cams and a good tune)
Red trace is Road America beast (modified stock airbox w/velocity stacks, decked head, 13 to 1 pistons, big Spears cams and a tune)
Blue trace is newest minI monster, softer midrange but still pulls hard on top. (Modified stock airbox, cams, no pistons or decked head)
Attached Image: temp_3.jpg
It ran well for the June weekend at Brainerd International Raceway. Throttle response is spot on so rideability is very good. Except for some minor quick shifter issues, damn things, it ran better than the rider did anyway. Due to time and budget restraints this is probably what we're going to Pittsburgh with. Anthony will have to wear his big boy leathers and do more with less I guess, lol.

What the hell are YOU doing on the couch?!

That top end really opens up when you start fiddling with these things, huh? That was the one thing the SS bike didn't have over the SV. But that mid-range, though Posted Image

Yep the stock airbox had little tiny holes to suck air in, just couldn't keep up!

The factory teams are really something to see. The scale of their 'stuff' is unimaginable. This was after the Road America round of Moto America. Here I'm waiting with my garbage scow in line at the dump station between the kitchen and hospitality units of Yamaha's caravan. Their bikes, team and equipment rigs were long gone. The driver of the unit in front of me is the team chef and an old club racer from the NE. Pretty cool guys all around. They said they envied our effort for its simplicity and it reminded them of their old days. I can't even imagine the logistics or costs of running an effort like theirs. Haha.

I may not be ready to challenge for a national championship but it sure was fun to race/walk (ok dump) among titans.
