Bought my Zuma with moped plates, went to the DMV to put title in my name, walked out of there with stickers for the moped plates already on there and thought I was winning...

2-3 months later I finally get a letter in the mail saying they are trying to register the vehicle but can't because it is incorrectly plated and now I must turn in my moped plate.

I'm pretty sure at this point I'm SOL...

It's a 50?

Shouldn't be hard to convince them to keep the plates - I got ours changed from motorcycle to moped.

Sometimes it takes the right DMV too, might be worth exploring another.

It is a "50" but has 70 kit. I'll have to question it when I go in with the letter, but they pretty much spelled it out in the letter that "in order to be a moped it must be 2.0 bhp and the zuma comes with 4.9 bhp from the factory"

It's not a huge deal except for if I ever try to re-sell it, but I will probably beat this thing into the ground.

I've been harping on this quite a while now as I went through it a few years ago with a Zuma as well. Basically the DMV has a set of guidelines and now based on the VIN number, not model or CC's only, you're screwed.

It sucks but a lot more people who have gotten moped plates in the past based on DMV incompetence will be getting these letters as time goes on. My wife new '15 Metropolitan 50 is the slowest slug I have ever ridden but because of it's build is considered a motorcycle unlike her old Vino 50 which is by far faster but was classified a moped based on VIN in the early 2000's.

I'm honestly surprised they are just now cracking down on this... The technology has been around for ages to add flags to this sort of thing.

Always something at the dmv. No matter which one I go to. Always something wrong. No standards...

I spit in their general direction. :twofinger:

I just rereg'd my 03 Zuma with moped plates in February and they sent me the year stickers without any issues. Is there a certain year they are starting with?

I don't remember, but I thought mine was '04. You might be ok if you didn't swap names on the title though. That is what triggered mine I believe.

I got my 03 re-registered as a moped six years ago, maybe seven. No issues yet. . .
